Get To Know: Arkansas State

Every week, BI gets you closer to Texas State's next opponent. This week, it's Arkansas State, the two-time Sun Belt Conference Champions.

Mascot: Red Wolves

Arkansas State's name is unique and new. The team used to be called the Indians - all the way up until 2008 - after the school deemed Indians as the mascot way back in 1931. The athletic program previously used Aggies, Gorillas and Warriors too.

Average incoming freshman GPA: 3.44

They are smart ones. In the fall of 2013, Arkansas State's freshman class had an average GPA in high school of 3.44 and an average ACT score of 23.3. It was deemed the "smartest class in school history." The school just recently graduated the most people in a two year period in school history.

Student-run media outlets: 4

The journalism program includes the oldest NPR radio affiliate west of the Mississippi River, a twice-a-week student run newspaper and an online radio station which launched this semester.

Most recognizable head coach: John Brady

Brady was hired as the team's 15th head coach in school history. He took the LSU Tigers to the Final Four in 2006. He is the only head basketball coach in the Sun Belt with Final Four experience. The previous coach at Arkansas State? Dickie Nutt, who now coaches at Southeast Missouri State.

Famous alumni

Arkansas State has had 16 athletes move on into the NFL, most notably quarterback Cleo Lemon, who had stints with multiple NFL teams and most recently played for the Toronto CFL franchise in 2011. Also on the list is Brad Franchione, Dennis Franchione's son. Rodger Bumpass, otherwise known as Sqidward on Spongebob Squarepants, has the most notable voice.
