Juco LB To Visit
It won't be too active of a recruiting weekend for the 'Cats, but this Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO) LB will be making his trip to Texas State this weekend. Akii (pronounced Uh-kee) "AJ" Smith, will be on his official visit starting Friday. Texas State started recruiting Smith towards the end of October and have officially offered him. Smith is a 6'2" 225lb OLB who has great speed. He was timed twice and ran 4.5 flat both times. Smith has already visited New Mexico and South Alabama. He's a little familiar with Texas State, but is very eager to set foot on the hill country. "I'm definitely looking forward to this visit. Coach English reached out to me in October and he helped recruit me to NEO out of high school. I don't know much about Texas State specifically. After my first couple of visits I know what to expect. I'm looking forward to meeting the coaching staff. Coach Conway visited us a couple days ago. He came to me more in the form of a personal adviser, not just a football coach," said Smith. Out of high school Smith was a qualifier, top 10% of his class actually. On the field, he didn't get much help. In his years on the varsity squad, they mustered a total of 5 wins. So add that up and coming from a small town, Stillwell, Oklahoma, Smith simply didn't get any looks. NEO was the only program with interest. As a prospect, Smith's speed sets him a part from most LB's. One look at his tape and you see he has an extra gear. Even more surprising he's only been playing OLB for about 2 years. In high school he played DE. The change in position was a little tough for him at first, but his attitude of playing hard every play has evened out things. Along with Texas State, New Mexico, South Alabama, Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee State, North Texas, Georgia State and UTEP have all offered. Smith is a mid year transfer and is ready to start the next chapter in his career. So with December 18th approaching, Smith has started to sort things out. "I have my top 2-3 picked out that I'm trying to decide between. It's how they reached out to me and showed me they care by recruiting me. Texas State is one of them. I'm looking forward to this visit."
