Looking For DTs

Texas State is set on at least signing one, possibly two, juco d-tackles this class. On Wednesday, the staff went back to a California pipeline for this latest prospect.

Pierce Junior College is one of the best juco's in the nation at producing D1 transfers. The 'Cats picked up Donta Clanton and Rusmin Nikocevic last class from the Cali juco. Earlier this week the staff returned and paid a visit to Gerardo Figueroa, a 6'3" 280lb defensive tackle.

"Coach Schultz visited me yesterday. No offer yet, but he said they had interest in me and liked my film. He'll run it by the DC," said Figueroa.

No offer was extended, but Figueroa is the latest in a group of juco defensive tackles that is on the board (Martial, Villarreal, LaChapelle, and Anderson) and being evaluated.

Figueroa shows great range and versatility. For the Brahmas at times he played as a stand up rush end, had his hand on the ground, dropped back into zone coverage from the line and would then shed blocks from his d-tackle spot. It's his play from the tackle spot that the Texas State staff likes. At this point he's simply waiting to see if he gets the green light for an offer.

He currently has offers from Middle Tennessee State, Arkansas-Monticello, Florida A&M, and Eastern New Mexico. In all likelihood, he will be a May transfer and that might be one reason for the lack of bigger offers. Although he's probably a spring transfer, he will still have three years to play two.
