'Cats Drop Nail Biter

Four Texas State Bobcats reached double digits and shot 63% from the field in the 2nd half, but it still wasn't enough as a late charging call helped stem the Bobcats away Thursday evening.

It was no coincidence at all that the match-up between Texas State and UALR had a higher feel of intensity and physicality. Both were starting Sun Belt Conference play and the hotly contested match-up went down to the final seconds before being finally decided. Both teams combined for 48 free throws.

With 25 tics left on the clock, TXST got the ball back. Senior Joel Wright made his move to the rack and finished with a lay-up tying the contest at 60 all, when a whistle waved off the bucket and signaled a charging call on Wright. UALR would nail 3 more free throws to ice the game.

Early on the 'Cats would build a 9 point lead, 22-13 with 4:24 to go in the first half. The Trojans would respond by heading to the locker room on an 8-2 run and make it only a 3 point deficit at the break, 24-21.

The 2nd frame wouldn't be so low scoring as UALR would double their output and Texas State would heat up too. Corey Stern (F), Emani Gant (F), and Phil Hawkins (PG) all led the 'Cats with 11 points each. Joel Wright (F) would pitch in 10. The bobcats would shoot 63% from the field in the second half, but so would UALR.

Will Neighbour (F) would lead the Trojans with 20pts and Josh Hagins would add 19 off the bench. TXST would lead by 3 in the 2nd half, 44-41 with 11 minutes to go, but UALR had enough momentum swing their way to reclaim the lead on a 9-0 run and wouldn't relinquish it. Joel Wright's free throws did cut it to a 1 point game at 57-56, but that was as close as the 'Cats would get.

Texas State gets one day to shake off the tough loss as they take on Arkansas State, Saturday afternoon with a 4:30pm tip from Strahan. On the year, Texas State is now 4-10 (0-1).
