D-Tackle High On The Bobcats
Standing 6'5" 320lbs, one would think that Alfonso Hampton is probably your typical run stuffing defensive tackle. Don't let his size fool you. He wears his 320lbs rather well. While at Southwestern JC (CA) he really developed at using his hands and quickness to be a well-balanced d-lineman. Hampton is a highlight reel of blowing by offensive lineman, whether it's with a swim move, juke or overpowering them, he's a balanced D-tackle that can do both, stuff the run or pass rush. Texas State saw Hampton's talents toward the end of the juco season and offered him about 1 to 2 months ago. Co-OC Mike Schultz is the lead recruiter for Hampton. "Texas State is standing out a lot at the moment with all the work Coach Schultz has put in. I'm locked in to visit this weekend (1/17/14)," said Hampton. The Bobcats are his only confirmed visit as National Signing Day (NSD) is just over 3 weeks away. Hampton has offers from New Mexico, Idaho, Akron, and UNLV. He's deciding between Cal, Idaho and South Alabama as possible visits in the final two visiting weekends after Texas State. As is the case for all prospects, the closer it gets to NSD, the pressure is heavier and the stress rises. Alfonso knows the feeling. "It's starting to set in with me on having to make a decision. I want to get these visits in to find out where I'll be for the next 2-3 years. If I go somewhere, I think would know, commit, and be content with that and not even take any more visits," said Hampton. Alfonso has only been playing organized football for 2 years now. His first season was as a freshman at Southwestern JC. He was a basketball guy when some teammates convinced him to try his hand on the football field. Hampton wasn't too sure at first, but it looks like that decision is about to pay off with a D1 scholarship. He'll have 3 to play 2 wherever he commits and signs.
