Ready To Visit

This juco combo guard who can play the two or one spot, will be taking his first official visit and he's lined up for San Marcos this weekend.

Back in September, Texas State Assistant Coach Talvin Hester went by North Platte Junior College (NE) and he noticed a guard who could shoot, get to the hole and play some defense. Fast forward six months and Ethan Montalvo has a Texas State offer and is ready to visit the hill country.

"I'm very excited to spend the weekend down at Texas State. Coach Kaspar and Hester are good coaches. I know a little about the university, but a lot about Coach Kaspar. He's won wherever he's gone," said Montalvo.

The Bobcats have the first crack at hosting Montalvo, while two other programs round out his top 3. Texas A&M and Nebraska-Omaha have also offered. Coach Billy Kennedy and Mitch Cole are leading the Aggie's charge for Ethan and have lined up a visit for College Station the weekend of April 11th. Montalvo hails from Omaha so he's making plans to also check out Nebraska-Omaha and not have to use one of his official visits for it.

The Coaching Staff likes Montalvo's skill set and feel that he can be a contributor at either the shooting guard or point guard spot.

"They think my best fit is at the two guard, but they like how I can handle the ball. I'm a smart player and I feel I can get a lot of minutes at the two guard or be a combo guard," said Montalvo.

Out of high school, being a six foot guard from the heartland didn't exactly translate into many quality D1 looks. So Ethan thought long and hard and went the juco route in hopes of eventually getting his chance to play ball at the next level.

"I didn't get a lot of big school looks. Some NAIA's and D2's. I believe I got overlooked. I gave it a chance out here (North Platte JC) and now I'm living the dream. At least 15 schools have come by and offered me," said Montalvo.

The 6'0" 165lb combo guard averaged 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals this past season for North Platte. On his way to earning 1st Team All Region 9 honors and All Region 9 Tournament Team.
