D-Coordinator Sounds Off

There are a lot of changes this spring for Bobcat football. A new fast paced offense, new O-line coach and probably just as important a new Defensive Coordinator.

After Texas State's recent scrimmage, new DC John Thompson talked about how the Bobcat "D" was looking two weeks into the spring.

How do you feel the defense looks
"I feel like we're making a lot of progress. The unity, fitting of everything coming together. I was really pleased where we were walking off the field today. We did some good things on the field. We had some third down stops, we had some red zone stops, but I saw some absolute glaring errors that we'll break down, cut'em up and go back again. I'm really pleased with our players attitude, they're playing for each other, they're listening, they're trying and it was positive."

Talk about guys having to step up on the D-line and secondary where you're replacing some key players
"You know everybody was brand new to me anyway. So I don't have that haunt of looking at what we lost. One good thing about that is you don't try to compare. We are what we are. Kris Peterson is playing really well, Dallas McClarty played nice up front. We're really coming home there. Having Mike (Orakpo) out has given some other guys, like Jerrid a chance to make plays. Just trying to piece it together with who it is right now.

We've seen you set up in a 4-3, then a 4-2-5, and even a 3-3-5. What's the base defense
It depends on who we play and who's out there, what are base defense will be. Our base is going to be the guys we have out there. I don't mean that in any way except, we got a system that we'll tailor to the players. I'm only married to Charlene, that's the only thing. Everything else, there's a lot of good defenses, all of them are good. It's what are guys buy into and if we fit that package with our players that we have right now. You've gotta be multiple, keep them off balance.
