LB On Watch List

This LB prospect is a man among boys coming off the edge of the defense. He is the son of a Hall of Fame and current San Diego Charger strength and conditioning coach.

Clay Johnston is a physical specimen out of Wylie HS in Abilene. Johnston is 6'2, 206 lbs, and runs a 4.6 40, and a 3.79 in the pro agility drill.

"This summer i plan on working with my dad as much as i can to improve all my times, and become even more explosive for my senior season and really try to impress the scouts," said Johnston.

In just his junior season, he recorded 136 Tackles, 31 TFL, 6 Sacks, 5 Pass Breakups, and 2 FF's. Clay was named District MVP, 1st Team All State, 1st Team All Big Country, and All Big Country MVP.

"I hate to hesitate, i just go out and try to be as decisive with my reads as i can, and above all just play fast," said Johnston about his style of play.

Currently Johnston has a lone offer from Southern Methodist University, however Baylor DC Phil Bennett showed up to practice during the week and told Clay they really like what they see in him. Texas State Secondary Coach Jason Washington was also at practice just a few days earlier expressing serious interest in the OLB prospect. Other schools showing interest are Oklahoma State, TCU, Iowa State, and Duke among others.

"Overall I'm just looking to be a part of a winning program, with good academics, and an atmosphere where i feel comfortable with the coaching staff and the other students," Johnston said about the factors that affect his decision.

So far he's only made one visit and it's been to SMU. However he plans on getting busy this summer and taking visits to Duke, Baylor and Texas State at least, and as many other schools as he can fit in. Currently Johnston lists Baylor as his favorite, out of the schools that are currently interested. He's confident he will see more offers once next football season starts and wants to keep his options open.
