Practice Report 8.4.14

Day one of fall camp took place on Monday evening as the Bobcats busted out the shirts and shorts for the first of twenty seven practices. BI was on hand to see the first practice of the fall season.

For the first practice of fall camp, there was plenty of emotion and and energy throughout the entire session. We've got some notes from day one and also some quotes from Head Coach Dennis Franchione and DC John Thompson.

--The tight ends as a whole look like an impressive unit. From Bradley Miller (Sr.), to David Lewis (Sr.) and Lawrence White (Sr.), who both had a couple of impressive catches in the 7 on 7 drill. Not to be outdone, but true freshman Gabe Schrade and Lucas Askew also hauled in impressive catches. Askew was hit on a seam route by Connor White (Fr.) and found his way to the end zone.

--On defense, safety Germod Williams (So.) brings an extra juice and a level of swag that will surprise most on-lookers. He plays at a high level and will let you know whether he got the best of you or not.

--Size wise, some of the true freshman are physically impressive: Cedric Gambrell (Fr.) looks rocks solid and heavier than his listed weight of 242lbs. WR P.J. Anderson (Fr.) and CB Andrew Aneke (Fr.) all are physically ready to compete at the D1 level.

--The most consistent unit on the D-line was the rotation of Marcus Dallas Jr (Sr.), Dallas McClarty (So.), Dondre Evloid (Jr.), and Kris Peterson (Sr.). Thomas Evans (Sr.) and Will Trevillion (RS Fr.) also rotated in with the 1's and as practice goes further into the month, we can expect to also see Mershad Dillon (Jr.) and Steven Eddings (Jr.).

Quotes from Head Coach Dennis Franchione

On the improvement of QB Tyler Jones
"There isn't an area we couldn't talk about him to a positive. Leadership, knowledge at what he's doing. No way to compare day one of year two to any day last year."

Talking about the status of the D-line
Elvoid (Jr.) and Guendling (So.) both have been here all summer. That really helps them out, but they still have a huge learning curve. They have talent and it will be a little bit of a how much, how strong we can get them mentally and physically. I think they'll be ready and confident in what they are doing.

Quotes from DC Coach John Thompson

Commenting on the defense in general
"I was pleased with our effort chasing the football, with the naked eye before we watch the film tonight. I thought we executed pretty well. There was some little things, but no busts.

Side-Note

Right as camp started we were able to confirm that juco signee Steven Eddings has been cleared and will be here on Wednesday for camp. A direct source confirmed to BobcatIllustrated.
