Get To Know: Navy

The Bobcats are coming off of an extremely early bye week in week 2, and are now dialed in on facing Navy Saturday night. Here's a little background on Texas State's next opponent.

Navy is a Division 1 FBS Independent school located in Annapolis, Maryland. In football they are set to join the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2015.

Navy Football began in 1879, though they only played 1 game that season it is still considered to be their inaugural season. The Midshipmen have won 1 National Title, back in 1926. They also have had 2 Heisman trophy winners, one of those being the great Roger Staubauch.

Navy comes into this season under Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo, in his 6th season at the helm. Posting a 49-31 overall record, during his term. They come into the 2014 season after posting a very respectable 9-4 record in 2013, ending in a bowl win over Middle Tennessee, 24-6.

Navy opened the season against #5 ranked Ohio St and led the Buckeyes until the 3rd quarter. The game ended in a 34-17 defeat. The Buckeyes referred to Navy as Pesky, and having a hard nosed Rushing attack.

The Midshipmen moved to 1-1 on the young season after defeating Temple on the road, 31-24. Another tough gritty effort, that saw Navy go up by 17 points in the 3rd Quarter, on the road.

Navy's biggest rival is Army. Including Air Force, the three service academies go head to head annually in order to decide who retains bragging rights of the "Commander-in-Chief's Trophy". A trophy that has been owned by the Midshipmen 9 out of the last 11 years, and two consecutively, seeking a third.

Bill the Goat is Navy's real life mascot and can be seen patrolling the sidelines during Navy home games.
