TXST Holds Off Lamar, 65-55

Led by three players in double digits, Texas State led from start to finish, and was able to fend off Lamar, 65-55 for the win on Wednesday night.

Texas State would shoot 50% for the evening, and Jamarcus Weatherspoon (Jr.), Wes Davis (Sr.), and Emani Gant (Jr.) would all reach double figures as the Bobcats would lead by as many as 15 in the second half, and seal the deal, 65-55.

JaMarcus Weatherspoon would turn it up in the second stanza, scoring 15 of his 19 points and hit some key buckets down the stretch to ensure the victory. Davis was the lone consistent deep shooting threat going 3 of 5 from behind the arc and finished with 15, while Emani Gant would register a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards.

"I thought Emani had a great game. Four steals, two blocks, even three assists, a double-double, he changed some shots and blocked some shots," said Head Coach Danny Kaspar. "If there's an MVP of the game, it's him."

The Bobcats would see their lead grow to as many as 15 points in the second half, when Weatherspoon would hit a driving layup. Lamar wouldn't get any closer than 6 points the rest of the way. Coupled with timely free throw shooting and key rebounds, Texas State would hold off the Cardinals.

On the night, the Bobcats would shoot 19 of 23 from the free throw line, at an 80% clip. Coach Kaspar was quick to point out in the post game the difference this year, compared to last year's team in shooting free throws.

"We might have collapsed. We played 11 close games last year and lost 10 out of 11. We were down one or two, or up one or two with two minutes to go or tied, and free throws in many of those games were the difference," said Coach Kaspar.

Texas State is 2-0 for the first time against D1 schools in nearly 16 years to start the season. The Bobcats now travel to face former Southland and WAC arch rival, UTSA, on Saturday afternoon, in San Antonio with a 2 p.m. tip off. The Bobcats will be looking for their third straight victory to start the season.
