Bobcats Win Big, 68-39
Texas State was down 14-9 in the early stage of the first half, but shook off their rusty play by going on a 17-0 run at the 12:51 mark. Junior Forward Cameron Naylor (6 pts) and Junior Guard Ethan Montalvo (5pts) would lead the spark with key baskets during the run. The Bobcats ended the first half leading 32-18, shooting 56%, as Howard Payne went cold shooting 27%. Head Coach Danny Kaspar touched on his team’s sluggish start in the first half. “I think early we were feeling our Thanksgiving meal. Some starters were not in my opinion giving as good an effort, so I just decided I’m going to go to the bench and let some players show me what they got.” The Bobcats were led by Cameron Naylor, who finished with a game high 18 pts, going 7 of 11 from the field and added 16 rebs. It was Naylor who sparked the first half run with a huge one handed posterizing dunk. “I thought that Cameron Naylor played a very good game in terms of playing hard and got a lot of rebounds. He scored well for us,” said Head Coach Danny Kaspar. In Ed Seay’s (So.) first extended amount of playing time he had a strong performance, looking good down low, holding his own. He went 5 of 6 shooting finishing with 10 points and 3 boards. Defensively the Bobcats held HPU to only 39 pts on 27% shooting. They also forced 17 turnovers and were able to capitalize 17 pts off of them. The bench was a big factor Sunday, pitching in 48 pts to HPU’s bench, only scoring 13 pts. Freshmen Forward Austin Evans and Guard Jonathan Wiley both saw their first action as Texas State Bobcats. Evans has chosen not to red shirt and Wiley is coming off a three game suspension per Coach Kaspar. Texas State is now 3-1 on the season. The Bobcats will play again at home on Wednesday, tip off is at 7 p.m. against Texas Lutheran.
