TXST Wins SBC Opener
Texas State would use a combination of stingy defense and hot shooting from guard Ethan Montalvo (Jr.) to outlast Troy, 57-46 on Tuesday night. Montalvo would spur on the 'Cats hitting (4) three pointers during a suffocating 23-0 run to close out the 1st half. It propelled Texas State to a halftime lead of 29-15. On the night, Montalvo would lead the Bobcats with a game high 20 points going 6 of 10 from beyond the arc, grabbing 3 rebs, and dishing out 4 assists. Troy would start off the contest on a 15-6 run. Fouls and missed shots would plague the Bobcats early on. Senior guard Wes Davis would try to kick-start the Bobcats offense scoring 8 of the teams first 10 points, before Montalvo caught fire. For the next 11:35 of the 1st half, TXST would turn in a great defensive effort, holding the Trojans completely scoreless and Montalvo would bombs away from deep. The second half saw the Bobcats start out hot with quick buckets from Davis, D.J. Brown (Sr.) and Jamarcus Weatherspoon (Jr.). They would then go cold seeing the Trojans get back into the contest with a 12-0 run of their own, cutting the deficit to only two points, 35-33. Once again Montalvo would answer for the Bobcats using his shooting to drain back to back treys, and eventually secure the win. With their defensive effort, TXST would out rebound Troy 41-25, and hold the Trojans to 5 of 24 shooting from deep. Sophomore Kavin Gilder-Tilbury would help clean the glass grabbing 9 boards. Texas State is now 7-3 (1-0) on the season, and is on a two game winning streak. There next game is against Georgia Southern, in Statesboro Georgia, with a 6 p.m. tip off on Saturday evening, January 3rd. The Bobcats look to go 2-0 in Sun Belt play and match their entire win total of last season.
