These candidates listed are names of Coaches who either have ties to Texas State, the current Coaching Staff, and are names that our BI Staff has simply thrown out for consideration. Here is our short list: Brandon Hall (Jacksonville State, Co-DC & Safeties Coach)
A younger, up and coming secondary coach with ties to DC John Thompson. In 2012, he served under Thompson as the safeties coach at Arkansas State. He then followed Head Coach Guz Malzahn to Auburn as a defensive assistant in 2013. In February of 2014 he was named the Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach at Jacksonville State. His secondary helped limit opposing offenses to only 190 yards a game through the air and accounted for 12 INT's.
Dan Lanning (Sam Houston State Secondary Coach)
In his first year joining the Bearkats as the Defensive Secondary Coach he helped lead them to the FCS Playoffs and semifinal round. He joined SHSU after coaching Outside Linebackers as a Graduate Assistant at Arizona State. He helped the Sun Devils defense rank No. 1 in the nation for tackles for losses, No.2 in sacks and No.3 in pass defense. He also was the recruiting coordinator and helped the Sun Devils win the Kraft Fight Hunger bowl in 2012. Texas State is no stranger in snagging coaches from the Bearkats, previously adding assistants Jeff Conway and Craig Naivar, who were both at Huntsville.
Thomas Rocco (Blinn JC Defensive Coordinator)
A coaching veteran of 11 years, the last 4 at Blinn where he spent the first 3 as the Secondary Coach and this past season as the DC. He's coached nine defensive backs who have all gone on from the Juco level to D-1, including one All-American player and three All-Conference selections. Every active player he has coached has gone on to play at a four-year school. He has coached and recruited Texas previously while on staff at Midwestern State. Current Texas State Linebackers Coach Brad Franchione is the tie in to Blinn being the former Head Man in Brenham.
Ben Beasley (Lamar Secondary Coach)
Joined Lamar’s coaching staff last February. He's spent his entire coaching career in the Southland Conference. His most notable time was working with Sam Houston, he helped the Bearkats to have one of the most successful school runs in school history, and he helped them become National runners up in two out of three seasons 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2011 the Bearkats secondary finished the season ranked fourth nationally in pass efficiency defense, and number one in the country in interceptions and takeaways. During his five year tenure in Huntsville, he produced three All-Americans and 11 All-Southland Conference selections. Again, a coach with deep recruiting ties in Texas and of the successful lineage from Sam Houston State.
One wildcard to keep an eye on, and it's in the form of a pipe dream, is current Texas Tech Cornerbacks Coach Kevin Curtis. The former College All American and NFL'er could be available as footballscoop.com is reporting that newly hired Tech DC David Gibbs will be bringing DB's Coach Zach Spavital with him from UH. It's TBD to see if Curtis will be retained. Has has spent 2 seasons at Tech and also spent 2 years with Navarro in the Juco ranks.
