Spring Practice: 3/6/15

The Bobcats had their fifth spring practice of spring ball, and are still figuring out some key parts and personnel in preparation for the fall. We checked in at practice today for an update.

The team hasn’t started full contact just yet, instead they are “thud tackling”, in other words they’re still following through in tackle form, but wrap up instead of knocking guys to the ground. Friday's practice was in full pads.

There isn’t a clear set of starters for every position yet, but there are a few players that will be #1 at their spot come August: Sun-Belt newcomer of the year slot back C.J. Best (Sr.), QB Tyler Jones (Jr.), CB David Mims II (Jr.), RB Robert Lowe (Sr.), OG Ryan Melton (Jr.), and OT Adrian Bellard (Sr.) are all expected to be anchors at their spots.

OL Felix Romero (Jr.) who started 9 games in 2014, should be a front-runner for one of the starting guard spots, while a healthy Brandon Sarabia could man the other guard. He and Melton switched up at the right guard and tackle spots while running with the first team. Red-shirt sophomore Jackson Hoskins is being looked at to possibly fill in at center for the 'Cats.

Lawrence White (Sr.), juco newcomer Chris French (Jr.), and Ryan Carden (Sr.) are seeing reps to step in and fill the void at TE left by Bradley Miller's graduation.

Red-shirt sophomores Karee Banks and Jeff Banks are competing for one of the starting DE jobs, there isn’t really a slight advantage for either one, both played physical and came off the ball fast at Friday's practice. Marcus Dallas Jr (Sr.) played the other end, while the d-tackles saw a rotation of Dillon, McClarty and Trevillion and Elvoid all fill in with the 1's.

LB Trey McGowan (Sr.) looked the best defensively. He had a few big plays and big hits during Oklahoma drills, and during 1st team offense vs. 1st team defense. His junior year was a breakout season and he looks to continue that success as the man in the middle of the Bobcat "D".

Best and WR Jafus Gaines (Jr.) looked good offensively, they caught everything that was thrown their way for the most part and showed off their speed.
