Late Option At DT

There is a level of uncertainty for some of the 2015 signees and the coaching staff wants to make sure that it's bases are covered. Enter this Juco prospect who has now shot up the radar at defensive tackle.

Earlier in the week, Defensive Coordinator John Thompson put in a call to Howard Houston, a 6'1" 300lb d-tackle from Foothill Junior College (CA), and let him know that he was an option.

"The coaches were still following me and it was kind of out of nowhere. An assistant coach pretty much went hard and literally the next day, they got me on the phone with the DC John Thompson. He loved my film and he said once he had seen the first few plays he already knew he was going to offer," said Houston.

Houston is currently a sophomore, and still has a red shirt year if needed. So he has 3 years to play 2. His path to getting D1 looks is a bit of a different one. Originally from Colombia, Missouri, Houston didn't play football until he arrived on the juco scene. In high school, believe it or not, Houston played basketball. Another sign that he's nimble, athletic and can move for a lineman.

Currently, he reports offers from: Appalachian State, Georgia State, South Dakota, Louisiana Lafayette, Hawaii and Texas State. With big time programs like Texas A&M, Pitt, Louisville, and others showing interest. Since he's got a red shirt year, some programs have already talked to Houston about sitting out 2015.

"I know a few schools want me to come in for 2016, bring me in now and sit me. Some of the other schools want me to come in and be an impact right away. It doesn't matter to me. I would like to go to a D1 as developed as I can be," said Houston.

Right now, Texas State is full for the 2015 class, so a spot would have to come open for Houston to be a late addition. Either way, the staff has made a pretty good impression on him so far.

"Just by talking to Coach Thompson, I can honestly see me playing for that guy. Talking to him was like, dang, it was business, but he has a sense of humor I like. You can tell he's been around the block a few times as far as recruiting guys like myself. Just the vibes and the personality he had, kind of separated him from the rest of the guys."
