Building A Bond

The onslaught of offers is continuing in the DFW Metroplex and we caught up with this Byron Nelson offensive lineman who became a Texas State target on Friday.

Surprise, surprise, not really. Texas State continues to dig in and target talent in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Leading the charge is O-line Coach Brad Bedell and he's now targeted Justin Self of Byron Nelson High School.

On Friday, Coach Bedell messaged Self to give him a call and before he knew it, he had picked up an offer from the Bobcats.

"Coach Bedell offered me this past Friday night. It took me totally by surprise," said Self. "He followed me on twitter, he sent me a tweet and told me to call him. I called him, talked to him for about 20 minutes and he let me know he was offering me."

At the time, Texas State was Self's 3rd offer, but since then, Navy has offered, to go along with New Mexico and Stephen F. Austin. Louisiana Tech, Houston, and Colorado are all programs recruiting Self and coaching staff's have told him that they'll be coming out to see him during spring football.

Although he currently lines up at tackle for Nelson High School, because of his 6'2" 275lb frame, he projects to the interior at the next level and that's where the Texas State staff sees him.

"He said he likes me at one of the three interior positions. Right now, I'm playing at right tackle, hopefully I can move into center because that's where I'll be playing at the next level, but right now the coaches have me at right tackle," said Self.

Justin feels he's a well rounded lineman and can perform at a high level whether it's pass or run blocking, so making the eventual transition to the inside won't be a problem for him.

Last season, he did make it down to a Texas State game, and is reassuringly interested in the 'Cats. He's doing his homework on the program and is starting to build a good relationship with the staff.

"It's a program I'm definitely interested in. I didn't know much before Coach Bedell called me, but afterward I definitely did some research on the program. I like the Head Coach (Dennis Franchione) and Coach Bedell, and what they stand for," said Self.

Nelson High School starts their spring practice on Wednesday, so Self doesn't have any visits planned in the immediate future.
