5 To the NFL

In what is arguably one of the best weekends ever for the Texas State football program, the Bobcats had 2 former players drafted and another 3 sign undrafted free agent deals for a shot at the NFL.

The weekend got started off with a loud bang when both Craig Mager (Chargers) and David Mayo (Panthers) were selected in the 3rd and 5th rounds of the NFL Draft, respectively. While the Bobcats didn't have any other player drafted, that didn't stop three others from signing free agent (FA) deals.

Running back Terrence Franks was signed almost immediately after the draft concluded Saturday evening, to a FA deal with the St. Louis Rams. He will be fighting for a spot in the Rams backfield, along with the #10 overall pick Todd Gurley. Look for Franks to contribute as a slot back, and also see opportunities on special teams.

Kicker/Punter Will Johnson was just as quick to get a FA deal. The Bryan native has a shot at even being closer to home, after he and the Houston Texans agreed to terms on a deal as well.

Last but not least, linebacker Mike Orakpo also agreed to terms with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite missing all but two games of his senior year due to a serious knee injury, Orakpo will get a shot to fight his way to a roster spot with the Cards.

The Texas State football program set a couple of important firsts in the programs history after this weekend. For the first time, two Bobcats were selected within the first 5 rounds of the NFL Draft. The other first is a total of 5 former players were either drafted or signed as free agents.
