Bobcats Offer Blinn DB

After being overlooked in high school, this safety out of Blinn College just received his first D1 offer to become a Texas State Bobcat.

Jaylon Bowden didn’t receive a D1 offer coming out of his senior year at Ft. Bend Elkins HS in Missouri City, TX. So when he finally got one from Texas State after one year at safety for Blinn Junior College, he literally couldn’t believe it.

“I was shocked, really. I thought he was playing with me, I thought it was a joke,” said Bowden. “I’ve had D2 offers, you know, but that was my first D1 so when he said they were offering I kept asking if he was playing…I’ve had a few other looks; a lot of schools are really interested but Texas State is my only offer so far.”

Houston, Cal, Utah, Utah State and Iowa are among the schools keeping their eye on Bowden after a solid freshman season at Blinn. He accounted for 28 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, one pass-defense and one fumble recovery while starting every game at safety for the Buccaneers, “I’m a physical, down-hill player that is basically coming to hit you as hard as I can,” said Bowden. “But don’t let that fool you; I can still cover really well.”

At 5’10”, 185lbs, he ran a 4.42 out of high school but Bowden said he recently clocked a 4.38. He will play his sophomore season at Blinn which will leave him two years of eligibility.

In high school, Bowden played middle linebacker his first two years on varsity but his coaches switched him to safety his senior year. It was there he roamed the defensive backfield with his former team mate and current TXST corner Andrew Aneke, “Yesterday I spoke to my teammate in high school, Andrew Aneke, and he was telling me how good (TXST) was. He said that I had the ability to come in start and I’m really interested in that.”

Aneke is RS freshman who didn’t play last season but is expected to contribute this fall. He had a nice spring, capped off with an interception in this year’s Maroon and Gold game. Having a childhood friend already in San Marcos is a good situation in Bowden’s eyes, “Getting a good education is the most important thing to me but I also want a family-oriented atmosphere. Make some life-long friends… I would love to come visit during the season some time. I know my summer is kind of busy right now but during the season I’ll come out.”
