Day number seven of fall camp, came and went for the Bobcats on Friday evening. Half the practice was spent on position drills, then Coach Fran decided to mix in some kickoff coverage, and practice was ended with some solid 11 on 11 action. Texas State worked with 11 on 11 both in goal line sets and the usual offense, spotting the ball near midfield. Here are some quick notes and takeaways from today's practice: --Freshman Kerry Walker looks the part of a speed rushing D-End. Not only does he look it, but you see his speed and quickness in 1 on 1 drills. He's constantly drawing the praise of teammates and coaches for getting by the blockers. --The corner spot opposite David Mims is being held down by Brandon McDowell, but Javante O'Roy is not going down without a fight. While McDowell was good in coverage during 11 on 11, O'Roy had his best day of camp, nabbing two picks by jumping on both routes and making a play. --The O-line was without a couple of starters who were held out today, Adrian Bellard and Jackson Hoskins, so the 1st team O-line looked this today: Melton, Romero, Cattaneo, Sarabaia, and Lambert, from left to right. --Along with O'Roy's two picks, the defense turned in a total of 5. Safety Damani Alexcee continues his stellar camp play by making a nice leaping pick over the middle on a Tyler Jones pass. Dila Rosemond and Trey McGowan also had INT's, adding to the defense's total on the day. --Toward the end of practice, DC John Thompson was working on some special packages, going to a 3-3-5 look and even a 3-2-6 set up. In the latter of the two formations, Rosemond and Demetrius Woodard were rotating in as the 4th safety. in the 3-3-5 look, the linebackers were McGowan, Teron Fitzgerald, and Stephen Smith. --Robert Lowe had the run of the day, breaking outside to the right on a handoff, bursting through the defense and getting to the second level virtually untouched for what would've been a 50 yard touchdown run. --There was no confirmation on this being permanent, but true freshman d-lineman Landon Beck was moved inside to D-Tackle with the 2nd team and he held his own. --Only Lumi Kaba was used as the kickoff specialist during the coverage drills. Brandon Smith and Dila Rosemond were lined up as the primary kickoff returners. Kaba showed a nice leg getting a few kickoffs down to the goal line. Here's what the 1st team defense looked like on Friday, in their base 4-2-5 set: D-Line: Karee Berry, Dallas McClarty, Mershad Dillon, and Rusmin Nikocevic
Linebackers: Trey McGowan (MLB) and Teron Fitzgerald (SLB)
Safeties: Damani Alexcee (WS), Easy Anyama (FS), and Stephan Johnson (S)
Corners: David Mims and Brandon McDowell
We'll have more with quotes from Head Coach Dennis Franchione, DC John Thompson, and cornerback Javante O'Roy, who all spoke with BI after Friday's practice.
