Here's some more background on Southern Miss

BI Contributor Roy Burkhart gives us some more background on Texas State's next opponent, The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, in this week's "Get to Know" piece.

Southern Mississippi has history in being a good program and is now trying to regain it's footing in Conference USA after three consecutive losing seasons. The Golden Eagles come into this game to play the Bobcats for only the second time ever. is calling this game with the Bobcats “The biggest game of the year for Southern Miss, and the biggest game of coach Monkens career”. The Reason is, it is seen to be a gateway for the Golden Eagles to reach a bowl this season.


Southern Miss History

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles football program represents the University of Southern Mississippi at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl level. The Eagles are members of Conference USA and play their home games at M. M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, MS.

The first game for this program was played back in 1912; they have an all-time record of 564-405-27. The Golden eagles are on their 8th coach all-time, Most notably of  the coaches is the Thad Vann era, where over a 20 year span the team compiled a 139-59-2 record, and only 1 losing season. They also claimed 2 National titles in that time in ’58 and ’62. Coach Vann was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987. Jeff Bower is the winningest coach in USM history posting a record of 119-83-1, and led the team to 14 straight winning seasons, and to Bowls in 10 of his last 11 seasons (1990-2007). Over-all the Golden Eagles have played in 22 Bowls, winning just under 50% of those games with 10 wins. They have 8 Conference titles under their belt also.


Location, info, Records

USM is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and The University has an enrollment of Just under 16,000 students. The School colors are Black and Gold, and the mascot is Seymour D’Campus, A jersey wearing, bold looking, Golden Eagle.  The Golden Eagles call Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M. M. Roberts Stadium Home. It is nicknamed "The Rock at Southern Miss" and boasts a seating capacity of 36,000. The stadium history dates back to October 29, 1932.


Notable Alumni and Rivals

The Golden Eagles have had some very impressive players walk the halls and many of those guys have gone on to greatness in the NFL, and various other pro leagues.

Over 100 players have played at the next level, some of the most notable are Steve Broussard, Reggie Collier, John Eubanks, Ray Guy, and perhaps the most famous of all is the legendary Brett Favre. USM has retired 3 numbers that will never be seen again on their field and they are: #4 Brett Favre, #10 Reggie Collier, and #44 Ray Guy.

The Golden Eagles have several Rivals but only one is considered to still be active and that is Louisiana Tech. The teams have met 46 times and USM does own the all time series lead 31-15, with the Bulldogs turning the tide and beating Southerm Miss last season, 31-20. The longest running of the inactive rivals is Memphis, having played 63 games, and the Golden Eagles also lead that series, 40-22-1.
