Quick Hits: Tech Beats Houston

Texas Tech capitalized late to beat Houston, 35-20, and get ready for another bowl game.

LUBBOCK — Tonight's game was one which could easily be lost.

Texas Tech took the lead for good with 1:13 left in the first quarter but never seemed to land the proverbial knockout punch. Tech and Houston traded scores throughout and the Cougars narrowed the Tech lead to 28-20 with 10 minutes remaining. From there, Taylor Potts found Lyle Leong to end the scoring at 35-20 with 7:15 left in the game.

It was echoed over and over again by players and coaches alike but tonight's win came about through the dedication and leadership of the seniors.  Taylor Potts completed 32 of 46 passes for 373 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT. Fittingly his final touchdown pass went to Lyle Leong.

— Taylor Potts and Colby Whitlock served as captains for tonight's game.

Detron Lewis recorded his first multi-touchdown game of the season. He finished with 11 receptions for 135 yards.

— Lyle Leong's fourth quarter TD gave him 17 on the season and 30 for his career, tying him with Jarrett Hicks for second place on the career list with 30.

— Taylor Potts eclipsed the 3,000 yard mark tonight. That gives Texas Tech a 3,000 yard passer in 11 consecutive seasons.

— Donnie Carona kicked a career long 63 yard punt. The punt also surpassed LaCour's 61 yard effort in the opener against SMU.

Baron Batch moved into 8th place on Tech's career TDs list with a touchdown catch to open the second half.

— 53,461 in paid attendance helped set a new record for average attendance in a season. This year's 57,107 passed the 53,625 total from 2008.
