The Texas Tech Red Raiders (22-13) defeated the Minnesota Gophers (19-14) to finish third in the NIT. Texas Tech junior Andre Emmett led all scorers with 23 points.
Texas Tech took control of the game early on, and held off a late Minnesota charge to lead 37-24 at the half. It looked like Minnesota was out of the game until they mounted a 20-9 run that tied the game with less than six minutes to go. Texas Tech answered the challenge to win the game 71-61.
Once again, the Red raiders showed how dangerous they can be when they have a more balanced offense. Andre Emmett scored 23 points to lead all scorers. Kasib Powell scored 17 points in his final game as a Red Raider. Robert Tomaszek was a key contributor, scoring 18 points. Hopefully Tomaszek can play like this in more games next season.
Minnesota didn't play a great offensive game, but a lot of that was due to the tenacious Red Raider defense. It would have been easy for the Red Raiders to lay down in the consolation game, but they played with the same aggressiveness they have shown all season. If the Texas Tech defense is this good next season, they will have a good shot at making the NCAA tournament.
