Willis Out at Tech

Texas Tech defensive coordinator and top recruiter decides to "pursue other opportunities."

LUBBOCK — Texas Tech defensive coordinator James Willis has left the Red Raiders and will not coach in the TicketCity Bowl on New Year's Day, according to a release from the Tech athletic department earlier today.

Willis was in his first season at Tech under head coach Tommy Tuberville after serving as the linebackers coach at Alabama during its national championship run. The release said he was "pursuing other opportunities."

"I wish James the best of luck but it is important for football team to keep pressing forward," Tuberville said. "We have a great defensive staff here that will carry the load along with my assistance as we prepare for Northwestern."

Willis is a former NFL player and also played at Auburn where he later spent time as an assistant coach with Tuberville and new Florida head coach Will Muschamp.

One source indicated that Willis is headed to Florida to rejoin with Muschamp as the Gators' new defensive coordinator, but nothing has been officially confirmed by Tech or Florida.
