Doege Clearly Ahead As Next Texas Tech QB

Texas Tech junior quarterback Seth Doege was impressive in the 2011 Spring Game and appears ready to be "the guy" for the Red Raiders next season.

LUBBOCK — There was no way Texas Tech was going to lose on Saturday.
That's the beauty of the spring game after all.

Now that the spring game is over and everyone has had a chance to come out and look at the players, there is one thing clear in my mind - Seth Doege will be the next starting quarterback for Texas Tech.

The junior QB who has not been a full-time starter in five years showed poise and precision at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday, completing 20 of 35 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns.

His only bad pass over the middle wound up being deflected by a receiver and into Daniel Cobb's hands for the only interception of the game.

You won't here the Tech coaches flat out say it, but this is the next starter.

"He did good," Tuberville said. "He made on pretty bad throw but the thing about Seth is he has all the abilities - he's just got to make the right decisions in certain situations, but he's gotten a lot better."

Tuberville also praised the improvement by Jacob Karam. Karam completed 10 of 13 passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns while Scotty Young connected 8 of 10 times for 112 yards and two scores.

But when talking to Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown afterward, he said it is still a competition. The competition might be more for the backup role, though.

"I thought Seth, early on, was really sharp. He had one bad series where he threw the pick," Brown said. "If he's going to be the starter, he's going to have to be more consistent. He can't have that one negative series.

"Seth is definitely in front right now. He's making better decisions and leading the offense better at this point - not to the point where is the bonafide starter, but there is a difference between him and then Jacob and Scotty, who are duking it out right now for second position to battle Seth. There's a lot of time left, but Seth is definitely in front right now."
