Red & Black Series: Game 2 Report

Well game two was riddled with more errors and walks than anything else, but the Red team rolled on.

Fall baseball season is coming to an end this week with the Red and Black Series here in Lubbock, and the Red Raider baseball team has some polishing to do.

The two teams combined to make five errors and walk eleven batters in route to a 5-3 Red Team victory and a 2-0 series lead.

The wind was blowing in from the west which eliminated any chance of driving the ball to right field and made pop-ups interesting for every Tech defender.

There were no extra base hits in the game for either squad. The black team only managed to tally one hit coming from their very first at bat of leadoff man Reid Redman.

Junior Pitcher Rusty Shellhorn held the Black Team to two runs on one hit in 4.1 innings pitched while striking out three batters along the way.

He kept the Black Team off balance the entire time he was in before he handed the ball off to Sophomore David Paiz in the 5th inning.

Paiz allowed one unearned run while using his breaking ball to get two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.

Both teams went scoreless in the 1st inning, but the Red Team got the scoring underway in the bottom of the 2nd scoring two runs on one hit and three walks.

Sophomore Pitcher Trey Masek struggled a bit out of the stretch walking two batters after third baseman Stephen Hagen also walked.

The inning would have been over had it not been for an error with two outs in the inning which resulted in two unearned runs when Masek walked the next two batters.

The black team would add two more runs in the next inning and one more in the 4th to give them all they would need to take the Black squad down.

The black team made one final push in the 5th inning adding three runs of their own, but they had zero hits and were helped by the Red team's errors in the inning.

That would be all they could muster as they failed to score in the 6th and ran into Tech's All-American closer John Neely who got the save for the second day in a row to seal the deal for the Red Team.

The series continues tomorrow at the newly named Rip Griffin Park at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free for everyone.
