Pitching and clutch hitting was the recipe to success for the Red Team in the series finale of the annual Red & Black Series on Friday at Rip Griffin Park in a come-from-behind 4-1 victory to sweep the series 4-0.
A 1-0 lead, no-hitter for the Black Team heading into the
seventh inning was not enough to hold off a potent Red Team offense, which has
been put on display by the throughout the entire series.
Back-to-back singles by Bryant Burleson and Stephen Hagen, who finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, put men at first and second without any outs.
Following a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, the Red Team was down to their
final out but proved resiliency in a clutch situation.
David Paiz, who was hit by a pitch, took first base to load the bases. It came down to junior Brennan Moore.
Moore drove in Burleson on an infield single, to tie the game at 1-1, then Hagen came around to score on a throwing error making it 2-1, advantage Red Team.
The Red Team added some insurance with a Ryan Diaz single through the right side of the infield scoring Paiz and Moore making it 4-1 Red Team, which would be the final. The Red Team scored all of their runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.
David Gates got the win for the Red Team after pitching a perfect sixth inning and Scott Erzinger set them down 1,2,3 in the seventh inning to notch the save.
With this series coming to and that also marks the end to the Fall Baseball season for the Red Raiders.
