Notebook: Texas Tech 70 Penn State 66

Lady Raiders upset the Lady Lions and here are some notes from the big win.

Game Notes Lady Raiders (7-0) v. Penn State (6-2)


-Texas Tech out rebounded the Lady Lions 48-36, Tech out rebounds their opponents by an 18.2 boards a game.


-Kierra Mallard had 18 points and 15 boards (9 offensive), this was here third double-double of the season and the 19th of her career.


-Coming off injury, Monique Smalls had 15 points and 8 boards, while totaling 7 assists without turning the ball over.


-Tech had 9 steals, 7 short of their average of 16


-Both teams made 22 field goals, but Tech put up 26 three pointers to 9 for the Lady Lions


-Kierra Mallard's 15 rebounds is one short of her career high of 16 v. Arkansas her Freshman year


-All but one of the starters for Texas Tech played 30+ minutes v. Penn State, 0 starters played 30+ minutes v. Texas State


-In the Lady Lions' two losses this year, they have totaled 2 three pointers, in their 6 wins, they have made 41.


Penn State Player of the Game


Junior Alex Bentley who was named the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year led the way for the Lady Lions with 18 points on 6-15 shooting. She was 1-2 from the three point line including hitting a three with :36 left to bring Penn State within one at 67-66. Her 13 first half points helped them jump out to a 36-34 lead and helped carry the team despite Maggie Lucas and Zhaque Gray combining for only eight points in the first half.

Texas Tech Player of the Game


Despite shooting 6-18 from the field, Senior Kierra Mallard led the Lady Raiders to victory with her third double-double on the season. Mallard took advantage of the young posts of the Lady Lions all day as she collected nine offensive rebounds helping Tech to several of their 16 2nd chance points on the night. But what really stood out was her ability to step outside and knock down a three when she was given the chance. Mallard hit two threes on the night including one as an answer to Penn State Sophomore Maggie Lucas' three pointer to bring the Lady Lions within one with 1:50 left on the clock. Mallard hit the three on the ensuing possession allowing Tech the opportunity to seal the game with Jordan Barncastle's three pointer with 2.5 seconds left.
