Kaufman In As New Defensive Coordinator

Tommy Tuberville announced on Tuesday the hiring of Art Kaufman as the new defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders.

So far Tommy Tuberville has filled the vacant coaching positions this offseason with coaches that he has worked with in previous coaching stints.

On Tuesday, the second-year coach continued that trend with the hiring of Art Kaufman as the new defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders.

"I looked at a lot of candidates for this job but when it came down to it, I turned to a guy that I knew could get the job done," said Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tuberville in a news release.  "Art is one of the best defensive coaches in the business and that is obvious when you take a look at the product he has put out on the field over the years.  He has experience in the SEC, ACC and Conference USA and I know he will soon make his mark here in the Big 12. We are excited to have him on our staff and can't wait to get to spring practice."

Kaufman joins the Red Raider coaching staff after serving three years at North Carolina, and was named the defensive coordinator in 2011. His first two seasons were spent as the linebacker's coach.

The Dermott, Arkansas native is a 28-year coaching veteran and has spent 10 years as a defensive coordinator at the Division 1 level. This marks the first defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders since Greg McMackin, who was hired in 2000, to have more than three years experience of being a defensive coordinator.

While the defensive coordinator at North Carolina he led the Tar Heels to rank No. 48 in total defense and No. 26 in rush defense and finished the season with a trip to the Independence Bowl and a loss to SEC-bound Missouri.

Coaching in Bowl Games is nothing new to Kaufman as he has coached in 12 of them during the span of his career.

Kaufman's connection to Tuberville dates back to his time at Ole Miss when he served as the defensive coordinator from 1995-2001.

Tuberville was the head coach from 1995-1998 before taking over the head coaching job at Auburn.

Kaufman will take over the defense now and try to get things turned in the right direction following a dismal season on the defensive side of the ball.
