The 2012 season for the Red Raiders tennis team has been a breakout year for the program.
Just one day after advancing to the Elite Eight of the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championships with an upset against No. 6 California, the doubles tandem of Gonzalo Escobar and Ronny Carvalho upset the No. 2 ranked duo of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz from USC on Saturday 6-3,3-2.
USC withdrew from the match due to injury.
This is the first time a Tech doubles team has advanced to the Final Four of the doubles championship in the history of the program.
This accomplishment has been made possible with the two winningest singles and doubles players in Texas Tech history in Escobar and Carvalho.
With their win against No. 6 California yesterday, the All-American singles players Escobar and Carvalho earned All-American doubles honors.
No.18 Carvalho and Escobar will now play No. 17 Ole Miss on Friday with first serve set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
Ole Miss has a duo of brothers in Chris and Marcel Thiemann at the McGill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
The Red Raiders have a shot at the doubles championship if they can overcome another opponent ranked above them – which hasn't stopped the tandem up to this point.
