Upset Again: Tech Duo Rolls into Title Match

Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho have upset their way to the National Championship match with another win against an opponent ranked above them in the polls today.

Rankings have not mattered in the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championships for Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho as they have been the underdogs in every match they have played thus far and they have won every one of those matches.

The road to the championship match has not been an easy one as the No.12, No. 6, No. 2 and now No. 17 doubles tandems in the country have stood in the way and have fallen for this pair of seniors to advance and play one more match in their Tech careers – a match for a National Championship.

Escobar and Carvalho, the No. 18 duo in the land, have worked their way methodically through the field of 32, with the biggest win coming against the No. 2 duo from USC to advance to the Final Four for a chance to play in the National Championship march.

Standing in the way of that dream was the No. 17 duo from Ole Miss.

Chris Thiemann and Marcelo Thiemann, brothers, entered the tournament 16-6 on the season and had stayed perfect in the tourney until running into the duo from Texas Tech.

Escobar and Carvalho, All-American Doubles and Singles players now, were rolling in the first set 5-1, before the Thiemann brothers were able to make a small run pulling within one at 5-4, before the duo slammed the door to get the first set victory.

Into the second set the Thiemann brothers had grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but once again, before they could do anything about it, Escobar and Carvalho were just one win away from playing for a National Championship.

Up 40-30, the Red Raider duo put the finishing touches on yet another upset victory, the fourth of the tournament to take the match 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the title match.

Carvalho and Escobar, entering the tournament were already the winningest singles and doubles players in Tech history and they have continued to prove just that with this run in the tournament.

The duo will face the duo from Ohio State, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, who in the last ITA Poll was ranked as the No. 1 team in the country in the match on Monday for a National Championship.
