Stadium to be Ready For Opener

Jones-SBC stadium has been the most visible part of a plan that will upgrade the football facilities to some of the best in the country. The $84.9 million plan includes a one hundred and fifty foot structure that towers over the west side of the stadium. This structure houses club seating and luxury suites along with a new press box and camera deck. The entire project is expected to be fully functional for the start of the Red Raiders home schedule.

The focal point of this new construction is the addition of nearly two thousand seats in the form of club and suite seating. These new seating options are expected to bring substantial revenue to the Texas Tech athletic department. Four elevators and an escalator will bring fans to these new seating areas which overlook the field and surrounding areas.

The club level features seven hundred exterior seats and four hundred and seventy interior seats. All of these seats have access to concession stands and a bar on the club level. The primary method for fans to reach the club level will be the escalator on the west side. This escalator can move up to two thousand people an hour, so officials don't expect any problems for fans.

The luxury suites are the biggest revenue source of this phase of the construction. There are forty-seven suites, forty-four of which are revenue generating. Ten of the suites are larger, providing up to eighteen seats for Red Raider fans. The suites have electric windows that can be opened to let in the sounds of the game or closed to keep out the Lubbock winds. All suites feature a private bar along with furniture custom made to meet the needs of the Texas Tech athletic department.

Officials say that there were some delays, but that is to be expected with any project this size. The project is expected to be fully functional for kickoff against SMU, and completely done by midseason. This project brings the facilities of the Texas Tech football program to a level equal to some of the top programs in the country.
