Recruiting Update: February 1st

Scott Fitzgerald gives another update from the world of recruiting.

It's down to the final weekend for the Texas Tech coaching staff.

With 17 commitments, the Red Raiders look to finish strong by closing as many as 8 possible additions by signing day.

New commits this week:

Gary Moore-TE Clarksville 6'5'' 215lbs. This is a big get for the Red Raiders, and his ratings have improved since he committed. Moore could eventually be a 6'5'' 245-250 lb replacement for Jace Amaro (Sad to think Jace only has 2 more years.) He could also be used in double tight sets as well as in goal line situations.

Zach Barnes DE  Loganville, GA 6'3'' 240lbs. Another good sized kid in a position of need for Texas Tech. And hopefully the Georgia floodgates open for the Red Raiders after this weekend. A one-time Tennessee commit, Barnes could be a game ready well-needed pass rusher this program has been lacking.

Devin Lauderdale WR Bellaire, TX 5'11'' 175lbs. The highest rated receiver recruit in some circles, and the best offer sheet of anyone right now in the signing class. Lauderdale has good speed and a great ability to receive the ball. In the end, it just made too much sense for either party to turn anywhere else. Let's hope Devin is done looking.

Malik Jenkins DE/OLB Ennis, TX 6'3'' 210lbs. I see a pattern forming here. Tech is going after guys on the outside that are tall and rangy with long arms to rush the passer that can add some additional weight. Jenkins fits all of these, and comes from a good program out in East Texas.

Dorian Crawford CB Walnut, CA 6'2''190lbs. A good sized JuCo corner, ready to compete for playing time immediately. Scout site says he is visiting this weekend, but Crawford actually visited this past weekend and committed a couple of days after.

Confirmed visits this weekend:

The Georgia 4 ™ - A group of high school teammates visiting campus this weekend. All with offers, all in a position of need. Safety Jeremy Tyler, WR/DB DeMarquis Polite-Bray, DE/OLB Jacarthy Mack, OL Joshua Outlaw.  This is not a package deal according to their coach, but all have offers from Texas Tech. Mack was a one-time Louisville commit. Anyone that is good enough for Charlie Strong is good enough for me. Polite-Bray is a speedy receiver. Tyler is a safety who will choose between WVU, Vanderbilt and Tech, and Outlaw is the highest rated of the three prospects and one time Florida commit, but will be the toughest to reel in.

Scout has Zelt Minor visiting Texas Tech this weekend, but I believe he is visiting SMU. Minor is 6'3'' 260 DL from  Houston Lamar. A longtime SMU commit, will decide between Texas Tech and SMU. A commit from Minor would make a nice tandem of DTs this class with J.J. Lollar, who is already enrolled.

Martin Hill – DB Pierce College, CA 5'11'' 185.  A JuCo corner who fell through the cracks, per se and now holds an offer from Texas Tech. He will choose between New Mexico St, Fresno St, Hawaii, and Texas Tech.

On the radar:

The big news of the week has been Dionte Savage OL from Arizona Western College. Savage visited both Texas Tech and Kansas over a span of 4 days last weekend, remains committed to Baylor, but Texas Tech "felt like home," a phrase he uttered multiple times when I visited with him. Savage was originally supposed to visit West Virginia, but the Oklahoma Sooners have come calling and Savage will now visit OU. This guy is a nasty OL who could come in, start, and be a leader. My gut tells me it's going to come down to Tech and Baylor.

Buckle your seatbelts, kids. This is going to be a fun ride until signing day.
