Timeline: Tech Basketball Since 2001

We cracked open the record books and looked back at the last 12 years of Red Raider basketball and all the ups and downs involved.

With all the changes that have come to the Red Raider basketball program in the past few seasons, we took a moment to lay out the road that Texas Tech basketball has traveled the last few years.

 

2001

 

Bob Knight is hired to be the new head coach of Red Raider basketball replacing James Dickey.

 

February 5, 2003

 

Knight wins his 800th career game as a head coach with a 75-49 blowout victory of Nebraska

 

2006-2007 Season

 

The last time the Red Raiders made it into the NCAA Tournament.

 

January 1, 2007

 

Knight becomes the winningest coach in college basketball history with his 880th victory as Texas Tech slipped past New Mexico 70-68.

 

January 16, 2008

 

Knight wins his 900th career game as a head coach with a 68-53 victory against Texas A&M

 

February 4, 2008

 

Bob Knight resigns from his position at Texas Tech. Finished his career at Tech 138-82 overall, son Pat Knight assumes the head coaching duties immediately.

 

2009-2010 Season

 

Knight got the Red Raiders back into post-season play by making it into the NIT and advanced to the quarterfinals. This also marked the only winning season for Tech in his time as the head coach

 

March 7, 2011

 

Pat Knight is fired as the head coach prior to the Red Raiders playing the Big 12 Tournament. Knight finished his three-year stint at Tech with a 50-61.

Former Kentucky and Texas A&M head coach Billy Gillispie announced as the new head coach of Red Raider basketball

Gillispie formally introduced as the new head coach of Texas Tech basketball

 

February 11, 2012

 

Texas Tech defeats Oklahoma inside the United Spirit Arena, 65-47, marked the first and only Big 12 Conference win for the Red Raiders in the 2011-2012 season.

 

August 31, 2012

 

Reports surface of NCAA violations where Gillispie exceeded practice time and the mistreatment of players. Gillispie was also admitted to the hospital the same day.

 

September 10, 2012

 

Gillispie is admitted to the hospital for a second time.

 

September 20, 2012

 

Gillispie resigns as the head coach of Red Raider basketball immediately citing health issues as the reason behind his departure. Assistant coach Chris Walker takes over day-to-day operations.

 

October 4, 2012

 

Chris Walker is tabbed as the interim head coach for Red Raider basketball.

 

October 12, 2012

 

Red Raiders take part in first practice under new interim head coach Chris Walker

 

January 5, 2013

 

 Chris Walker leads the Red Raiders to first Big 12 win of the season beating TCU 62-53

 

January 23, 2013

 

Red Raiders defeat Iowa State 56-51 marking the second victory in Big 12 play marking the most victories in conference play for Tech since the 2010-2011 season when Pat Knight's squad won five games in Big 12 play.

 

Marc 13, 2013

 

Red Raiders defeated West Virginia in the first round of the Big 12 Championship Tournament marking the first victory in the Big 12 tournament since 2010 when Tech defeated Colorado

March 16, 2013

 

Entire men's basketball coaching staff is fired except Chris Walker.

 

April 1, 2013

 

Tubby Smith is officially announced as the new head coach of Red Raider basketball.

 

April 2, 2013

 

Tubby Smith takes part in a 2 p.m. press conference facing the Lubbock media for the first time as the new head coach.
