LUBBOCK-Texas Tech Volleyball defeated the Abilene Christian Wildcats 3-0 Tuesday night in the home opener at United Spirit Arena.
Tech (4-1) breezed through the first two sets winning each 25-17. Junior outside hitter Breeann David led the way with 17 kills and eight digs. David contributed to 8 kills in the first set.
The Red Raiders pounded away at the Wildcats (2-2) for a total of 44 kills. The Wildcats, who are newcomers do Division I, combined for 24 errors.
The serving game proved to be misleading in the scored. Abilene Christian had a serving ace and a service error. Tech had four service aces with David scoring three of them. However, the Red Raiders also had five service errors. Three of the errors were given to David.
The third set was closer than the first two. The Wildcats came out of the locker room and scored the first four points of the set. Abilene Christian had the lead for much of the first part of the third set. Tech would end up winning 25-19 to complete the sweep.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Loerch who had eight kills and four digs. Loerch also led the Wildcats in errors with eight.
Freshman middle blocker Lexi Mercier was a key factor for the Wildcats with five kills and two digs. Sophomore setter Sarah Siemens contributed 23 assists and 13 digs.
The Red Raiders lone senior Aubree Piper had a big game with 12 kills and a dig.
Tech travels to Pullman, Wash for the Cougar Challenge. The Red Raiders take on Montana and Washington State Friday. Saturday features matchups with South Dakota State and Eastern Washington.
Tech will play against the Wildcats again in Abilene September 10. Their next home game is September 13 against Montana as a part of the Lone Star Showdown.
