Big 12 Predictions: Week Four

Joseph Yeager makes his picks as we head into week four of the college football season.

There are no Big 12 games of national import this week, but there are several intriguing matchups. West Virginia has an opportunity to regain some credibility when they venture to College Park to face an undefeated Maryland squad. The reeling Texas Longhorn program could stop the hemorrhaging with a home victory over Bill Snyder's crew. And Kansas and Iowa State could demonstrate that they actually belong in the Big 12 if they can strap it on Louisiana Tech and Tulsa respectively.

Baylor versus Louisiana-Monroe

The last time the mighty, mighty Warhawks (What the heck is a "warhawk"?) faced a Big 12 team was on August 31 when they fell to Oklahoma 34-0. Since then La-Mo has defeated Grambling and Wake Forest. Never mind that, because the visitors from Louisiana will have nothing to slow down the blowcharged Bears.

Prediction: Baylor 56, Louisiana-Monroe 15

West Virginia at Maryland

The Terrapins haven't exactly played a murderer's row of opponents Florida International, Old Dominion and Connecticut, but they handled those opponents with good dispatch. West Virginia, on the other hand, barely eked out a win over a William & Mary team that belongs in the same category as Florida International and Old Dominion. If the Mountaineers' quarterback situation is not squared away come Saturday then West Virginia will have a long night.

Prediction: Maryland 23 West Virginia 18

Texas Tech versus Texas State

On paper the Red Raiders should rough up the Bobcats with no problem just as they did last year in San Marcos. But Tech is coming off an emotional win over TCU and they are facing a no-name opponent that is probably better than the Red Raiders think. We will see if Kliff Kingsbury's approach—borrowed from Mike Leach—of approaching every opponent the same pays off. It's another early test of Kingsbury's coaching mettle.

Prediction: Texas Tech 40 Texas State 9

Kansas State at Texas

The University of Texas' improbable run to a Big 12 championship and BCS bowl berth begins when Kansas State comes to town. It could easily end that same night. Could, but won't. Alas, the dream flickers for another week.

Prediction: Texas 27 Kansas State 24

Kansas versus Louisiana Tech

Make no mistake—this is a battle between two bad football teams. Louisiana Tech has lost to Tulane and Kansas spit the bit against Rice. It is also a battle between two high-profile transfer quarterbacks—Kansas' Jake Heaps and Louisiana Tech's Scotty Young. Thus far, neither has indicated that BYU and Texas Tech will be missing much.

Prediction: Kansas 19 Louisiana Tech 18
