Protect the Quarterback
If Texas State has any chance to win against the Red Raiders, it's going to come from freshman mistakes by Texas Tech quarterbacks. The Red Raiders have a young offensive line. Dennis Franchione is a defensive guru whose offenses keep the ball on the ground. The Bobcats will look to force turnovers by applying pressure on Tech quaterbacks. Tech needs to keep the sack total under four to be effective.
Stop the Run
The gameplan for Texas State will be to get out of Jones AT&T Stadium as soon as possible. The Bobcats will run the ball and look to keep the fast-paced Texas Tech offense off the field. If the Red Raider defense can consistently produce three-and-outs, Texas State's defense will need to reserve IV's at Covenant or UMC, because they will be exhausted. Texas State needs at least one rusher to gain at least 100 yards on the ground. Time of possession will be one of the most crucial stats in this game and the Bobcats must win it by 10 minutes.
Limit Freshman Mistakes
The Red Raiders made many mistakes against TCU. Texas State will look to pressure Tech's young quarterbacks with their front seven. Texas Tech needs to throw zero interceptions. If Tech does not turn the ball over, Texas State will be struggling to hang with the Red Raiders. The Bobcats must force turnovers and the way to do that is giving Tech's young quarterbacks happy feet.
