It's no secret that Kansas uses a rushing attack to wear down opponents and make games shorter.
Rushing is not the secret to a Jayhawks victory.
Defense is the forgotten ingredient that keeps Kansas alive. The Jayhawks would be 1-2 without two late red zone fumble recoveries against Louisiana Tech.
Junior cornerback Dexter McDonald leads a Jayhawk secondary that has allowed just two touchdowns in three games. The Jayhawk defense has intercepted more passes than the Kansas offense has thrown for touchdowns.
McDonald has an interception this season, but could easily have a second. Louisiana Tech's wide receivers had to play defense on more than one occasion to keep McDonald from intercepting passes.
Texas Tech is using two true freshman quarterbacks who have struggled in certain aspects of the game. Walk-on Baker Mayfield has struggled to find his teammates in the red zone. Davis Webb has been inaccurate completing just over half of his passes.
The Red Raiders also have a young line. Three sophomores are on the starting line and Kansas linebacker Ben Heeney has recorded two sacks. If the freshmen quarterbacks get happy feet, the secondary will be ready. In particular, Dexter McDonald will be waiting.
The Jayhawks ran all over Texas Tech's defense in 2012, but the Red Raiders came out victorious. Kansas must force turnovers and halt Kliff Kingsbury's Air Raid offense in order to win. Dexter McDonald is the man to do just that.
