Student attendance around the country is down including at nine Big 12 Conference schools.
That is not the case at Jones AT&T Stadium.
The Texas Tech student section is not just up during the game, but during warm-ups.
Junior tight end Jace Amaro has noticed.
"It's pretty incredible how many people come out there when we're warming up," Amaro said. "It really helps us get ready for the game."
Some of the older students and many alumni may reminisce about the Mike Leach days. It is actually quite different from then. Former Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville was never able to get student attendance to break the 2009 record for the average student attendance of 9,009 fans. This season, the record seems like an awful number.
The student section of 2013 is shattering the previous record with an average attendance of 13,900. The student attendance record has been broken twice this season. It currently stands at 16,092, which took place on a Thursday night when TCU entered Lubbock.
Tech co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie said the student attendance helps significantly.
"To support our players, and as peers, that says something," Cumbie said. "When they come to the football games and they support our guys, it's the biggest thing they're encouraged by."
Earlier this week, the student newspaper displayed a full page ad featuring Kliff Kingsbury thanking the students for their support.
Kingsbury seems to agree with tight end Jace Amaro, who said he noticed the student section during warm-ups.
"It means the world to them (the football team) when they're here early during warm-ups and getting us going," Kingsbury said. "So that's been a huge part of our success so far."
The students have come out in such large numbers, the Texas Tech Athletics Department opened up an extra section of the stadium for the rest of the season to the students.
Saturday marks the first day game at Jones AT&T Stadium this season. It will be interesting to see how the early game affects student attendance.
Kingsbury said he hopes the students keep the trend going.
"It's been incredible," Kingsbury said. "That student section, I've never seen one like it. Hopefully they'll keep coming."
Texas Tech hosts Iowa State Saturday at 11 a.m. It is homecoming and the theme is Tech Loves The 90s.
