The inside receiver position is one of the most important positions of the air raid offense.
West Virginia Head Coach Dana Holgorsen used to be the inside receivers coach at Texas Tech.
Holgorsen was an inside receiver for Iowa Wesleyan when Hal Mumme was the Head Coach and Mike Leach was an assistant. One of the reasons Holgorsen has seen success as an offensive coordinator is because he understands how important the inside receiver position is.
Freshman Daikiel Shorts is the best inside receiver at West Virginia. He doesn't have the most yards or the highest average, but the inside receiver is not supposed to. The inside receiver position makes a lot of catches and scrounges up the yards after the catch.
Texas Tech has seen great success with the inside receiver position. Holgorsen coached Danny Amendola, Trey Haverty, Eric Morris and Wes Welker during his time at Texas Tech.
Shorts has 218 yards and two touchdowns this season. That's not a lot in six games. The Mountaineers offense has been unstable this season. West Virginia has started three quarterbacks this season and none of them have done well on the road.
Against Oklahoma, Paul Millard lost a fumble and was intercepted as a part of four turnovers by the Mountaineers. Ford Childress could not move the offense against Maryland during a 37-0 loss. Clint Trickett refused to throw short passes to the inside receivers after Baylor took a commanding lead.
When West Virginia wins, Shorts has at least five receptions. In the Mountaineers three losses, Shorts hauled in two total and both receptions came against Baylor, after the Bears had already rung up 49 points.
There's a reason Texas Tech is known as "Wide Receiver U". It's because of Tech's inside receivers, many of which came from the air raid and the more successful ones were coached by Holgorsen.
