The Oklahoma Sooners do not have much of a passing game.
The rushing game, on the other hand, is a big reason why the Sooners are 6-1.
Oklahoma features a couple of key running backs. For those who mistake Blake Bell for a running back, I'm sorry. Bell is actually a quarterback who runs a lot.
The Sooners have ten different players who have carried the ball at least once. Some of the running backs who have scored a touchdown this season include Damien Williams, Keith Ford and Trey Millard.
The leading rusher for the Sooners is senior Brennan Clay. The San Diego native produces over six yards per carry and has scored three touchdowns this season, which is a lot for a team who has utilized ten different players in the rushing attack.
Williams is more of the flashy runner. The Sooners are known for running backs who punish defenses by lowering their shoulder and smacking linebackers to the turf.
Clay is the ground-and-pound man this season for the Sooners. Oklahoma enjoys wearing out defenses, which is something Texas Tech has been susceptible to for the past 12 seasons. Bring in Matt Wallerstedt and all of a sudden the Red Raiders are third in rush defense in the Big 12. Oklahoma will need to wear down the Texas Tech defense, particularly on third down which the Red Raiders call "the money down."
That's where Clay comes in.
A flashy running back is not the best way to wear down a defense. The best way is by rushing it up the middle and pummeling linebackers in the mouth. Clay punishes.
The Sooners have 200 more yards rushing than passing. Tech must stop the run. The Sooners have been held under 200 total rushing yards twice this season. One of those came against Texas in the Red River Rivalry, the Sooners only loss.
Tech must force Blake Bell and Trevor Knight to pass. The Sooners will lose if the ground game is not running.
