Turnover Issues

Former Dallas Cowboys lineman Dave Widell once said, "Turnovers are like ex-wives. The more you have, the more they cost you."

No. 15 Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 in Big 12) was fortunate its horrible turnover margin hadn't cost them until last week against Oklahoma. But after turning the ball over three times and only forcing one in Norman, the Red Raiders suffered its first loss, 38-30.

"Coach Kingsbury harped on that from day one. As an offense, we've done a terrible job this season giving the ball away, and that's been a big part of our season of being in close games like that," Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro said. "You can't turn the ball over. That was a huge reason why we lost."

Texas Tech's minus-6 turnover margin is ranked No. 103 out of 123 FBS schools. If the Red Raiders want to make a push to win the Big 12 championship, they are going to have to reverse this trend, starting this week with No. 18 Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1).

That's not going to be an easy task, though. The Cowboys are tied for the seventh best turnover margin in the nation at plus-9.

After forcing 11 turnovers in the first five contests, Texas Tech's defense has forced just two in the last three games. Oklahoma State on the other hand, has come away with seven in the past two weeks in victories over Iowa State and TCU.

"We have to do our jobs, we're going to run our menu," Texas Tech defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt said. "If we're in man, we got to play technique, if we're in zone and the ball goes in the air, we can't sit around and wait for the receivers to come down with it. We got to go get it and play with a swagger like we had been playing for several games this year."
