Kansas State Player to Watch

Texas Tech has yet to show they can stop a solid rushing attack. The Kansas State offense is primarily a running team and the center of the Wildcat offense is a running quarterback. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Sams is the leading rusher for Kansas State with 633 yards and eight touchdowns. Sams has twice as many rushing touchdowns as he has passing touchdowns.

The Kansas State offense is best at rushing and the center of the Wildcat offense is a running quarterback. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Sams is the leading rusher for Kansas State with 633 yards and eight touchdowns.

Sams has twice as many rushing touchdowns as he has passing touchdowns. Don't let that fool you though. Sams completes 75.6 percent of his passes and trickery may be part of the reason why.

Texas Tech defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt said the rushing game is not the only tough thing to defend against the Wildcats.

"The quarterback run game out of multiple sets stresses you more than anything," Wallerstedt said. "You can load the box and they've got the play action off of it. They can throw it around the perimeter."

When Sams is in the game, Kansas State Head Coach Bill Snyder likes to call a pass option play. Sams is most effective on this play when he runs up as if a quarterback draw was called. The defense, who is usually looking for the run, bites on the draw only for Sams to pull up just short of the line of scrimmage to complete a pass. Usually, this pass is thrown to a wide receiver running a post route.

Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury agrees with Wallerstedt that the play action pass must be stopped.

"You have to play assignment football," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "They do a good job with their play action, and they have great receivers outside that can really run. So we'll have to be great with our eye control and be really disciplined."

The Wildcats use a two quarterback system replacing Sams with junior Jake Waters for most passing plays. Sams is a dangerous threat in both vicinities and if Tech does not stay honest, Sams can make big plays in the passing game.

Wallerstedt knows what Tech's top priority is though.

"We've got to go into this one and take away the run."
