The matchup: Texas Tech opens up the Candi Whitaker era against Texas-Pan American. The Lady Raiders lost four starters to graduation and the lone returning starter, Kelsi Baker, is out for the season with a torn achilles tendon. Tech finished the 2012-13 season with a 21-11 record losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to South Florida. The Broncs finished 2012-13 with a 12-16 record. Both schools have new coaches. Larry Tidwell will make his Broncs debut as head coach Sunday. The Broncs return one senior and six players overall.This is the Broncs first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The only meeting came in 1992 with the Red Raiders emerging victorious 79-36.

Tech player to watch: Junior guard Amber Battle had a double-double in the second half alone in an exhibition game against Angelo State. Battle scored 12 points and snatched 10 rebounds in the second half.

UTPA player to watch: Sophomore guard Kaelynn Boyd averaged 8.4 points, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 2012-13.

Notable: The last time Texas Tech opened the home schedule against Texas-Pan American, the Lady Raiders won the NCAA Championship.
