LUBBOCK - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders blew an 11 point halftime lead, but managed to come back and defeat the New Mexico Lobos 64-56 Wednesday at United Spirit Arena.

Tech once held a 15-point lead in the first half, but seemed to lose focus and the Lobos took the lead at various points in the second half. Tech head coach Candi Whitaker pointed to the youth for the blown lead.

"We're young and we had a big time lapse to start the second half," Whitaker said. "But they fought back and it's great to be in game situations like they were tonight."

The Red Raiders started the game firing on all cylinders. With 1:41 remaining in the first half, redshirt freshman guard Minta Spears was outscoring the entire Lobos roster 12-11. Spears finished with 16 points.

"I think it helped that I just knocked down the shots," Spears said. "I also tried to come into the game focused and prepared for the game. My teammates did an awesome job of getting me the ball."

Spears was not the only one who played well. Junior guard Amber Battle finished with her second double-double of the young season. Battle, who is from Albuquerque, said it was a special game for her because she grew up playing around many of the Lobos players.

Tech lost to New Mexico 65-51 in Albuquerque one season ago. The Lady Raiders were a completely different team that season. Tech has five new starters and a new head coach. Whitaker said the Lobos are a tough team and the victory is a nice indicator.

"This was a game I thought would be huge if we could win it," Whitaker said. "New Mexico is a very good team. They're big, they're strong, they have a lot of great players. They're well coached, so for us to win it tonight with our young team was a huge step in the right direction."
