A 7-5 regular season still has its silver linings, and it's not just a trip to San Diego to play in the Holiday Bowl.
The Associated Press announced its Big 12 all-conference selections for the 2013 football season on Monday, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders were well-represented.
Jace Amaro - the highly-touted junior tight end who, depending on your scouting service, is a top-two draft prospect at his position – was named a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection. He led Red Raider receivers in receptions (98), yards (1,240), and yards per game (103.3). He also scored seven receiving touchdowns. Amaro's reception total is the most for any Texas Tech junior, the most in the Big 12 this season and the second-most in the nation.
Also joining Amaro on the All-Big 12 first team was offensive lineman Le'Raven Clark. The redshirt sophomore was a stalwart presence on an otherwise wobbly line, starting every game for the Red Raiders.
Will Smith was picked on defense as one of the four linebackers on the defensive first team. He was the star of the Red Raider defense, racking up 106 tackles (76 of them solo) to lead the team in that category. He trailed defensive lineman Kerry Hyder in tackles for loss (8.5 for 34 yards), but was the team's sack leader (five for 25 yards).
Hyder was named to the second team on defense, a major accomplishment for a player who was a first-teamer by many publications last season. For 2013, Hyder finished fourth in total tackles (60) while contributing two sacks.
On the offensive side, receiver Eric Ward was named to his first All-Big 12 second team. The senior leader hauled in 80 receptions for 904 yards (second on the team), and led Texas Tech in total touchdowns with eight – a slight drop-off from the 12 he scored in 2012. Ward is no stranger to All-Big 12 teams, having been named to various third teams and honorable-mention squads in his collegiate career.
These players will look to add to their accomplishments at Texas Tech as the Red Raiders prepare to play the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl on December 30.
