Texas Tech vs. No. 25 Oklahoma
When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: United Spirit Arena
Radio: 97.3 YES! FM
The matchup: The Lady Raiders open Big 12 play against the Sooners who were without leading scorer Aaryn Ellenberg against Samford on Dec. 29. The Lady Raiders are full of youth in a new era under coach Candi Whitaker, which could spell trouble against a ranked opponent. Oklahoma features four players who average double-digit points. The play of the centers may be a huge factor in this matchup. Tech will need to keep Shauntal Nobles and both Schneiders out of foul trouble or the Sooners will dish the ball to the paint.
Texas Tech player to watch: Redshirt freshman guard Minta Spears can light it up from beyond the arc. When Spears is on fire, it sparks the rest of the team. When she's off, Tech can go through long periods without a bucket. Tech will need top-notch guard play to run with the Sooners.
Oklahoma player to watch: Senior guard Morgan Hook burst onto the scene for the Sooners a year ago after Whitney Hand sustained a season-ending injury. What was supposed to end Oklahoma's run towards success became a coming out party for Hook. The 5-foot-10 guard is at it again this season with 81 assists placing her name in third for the Big 12 leader in the category. The two-time Gatorade Arkansas High School Player of the Year averages 10.7 points this year and looks to dish the ball to the Sooners center Nichole Griffin
Notable: Texas Tech has dropped 16 of their last 17 games against Oklahoma. The lone victory came on March 5, 2011. Before this run, Texas Tech led the all-time series 21-10. The Sooners now lead 26-22.
Quotable: "We're the underdogs and it's going to be a challenge, but we're excited to compete and we're gonna keep fighting every step of the way."-Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker
