Texas Tech vs. Kansas
When: 7 p.m. Saturday
Where: Phog Allen Fieldhouse
Watch: ESPN3/Watch ESPN app
Radio: 97.3 YES! FM
The matchup: Two teams in search of their first conference victory will get a chance to get over the hump and get the monkey off their back. Texas Tech and Kansas have struggled out of the gates in Big 12 play with identical 0-3 records. The main difference is, Texas Tech is rebuilding after losing their whole starting lineup and watching coach Kristy Curry bolt to Alabama.
Kansas, on the other hand, has seven returning letterwinners including CeCe Harper and Bunny Williams. Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson is also in her tenth season with the Jayhawks. Although the two teams have identical records, they are polar opposites.
Kansas likes to get the ball inside to their post, where junior Chelsea Gardner awaits. Texas Tech will play more guards than usual a lot of the time and likes to put up shots from downtown.
Texas Tech player to watch: Freshman guard Marina Lizarazu cut down on her turnovers against Iowa State and was the only Texas Tech player to score in double figures. Those who have kept up with the Lady Raiders this year know about Lizarazu's stylish dribbling, but the stat sheet indicates that she is maturing as a player. Lizarazu shot one three-pointer against Iowa State and it was the only three Tech made the whole game. She went four-for-five from the field and delivered a pair of assists.
Kansas player to watch: Junior forward Chelsea Gardner is a beast down low. She is the team leader in points, rebounds and blocks for the Jayhawks. Texas Tech will need strong, physical play out of Shauntal Nobles and the Schneider sisters to keep her from scoring points in the paint.
Notable: The past two seasons have featured sweeps. Kansas swept the Lady Raiders in 2012, but Tech returned the favor in 2013.
Quotable: "Spirits are still high and we're trying to find things that we're doing well and clearly areas that we can improve on, but we're excited to have another opportunity." -Candi Whitaker
