A Texas Tech representative told RaiderPower.com Wednesday night Beau Carpenter has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules.
The athletic department did not elaborate any further and it remains unclear whether Carpenter will be eligible for reinstatement.
The 6-foot-6, 285-pound junior started seven games all at right guard in 2013, including the 37-23 win over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl, after staring nine games at left guard in 2012 and once in 2011.
Though there is no mistaking Carpenter is a big loss for the team, the Red Raiders would appear to have options to replace him.
Alfredo Morales (6-3, 320) started nine games as a sophomore in 2013, all at left guard, James Polk (6-6, 335) started seven games splitting time at both guard spots as a jumior and true freshman Baylen Brown (6-4, 305) started the final three games of the season; twice at right guard and then on the left side for the Holiday Bowl.
This spring could also be big for 2013 signees Cody Hayes (6-5, 275) and Josh Outlaw (6-3, 290), who both redshirted this past season.
I met, interviewed and watched Hayes play in high school and he is a big, athletic talented player. I would be shocked if he didn't see the field a lot over the course of his career, but I would be surprised if he did next season.
Then there's Dontae Levingston, a three-star rated prospect and junior college transfer from Santa Monica College, who signed in December but has yet to enroll due to a paperwork issue.
Texas Tech also currently has three high school offensive linemen commits, all three-star rated prospects, in the 2014 class. Neither Round Rock's Robert Castaneda (6-4, 300), a Semper-Fidelis All-American who is visiting this weekend, Belton's Justin Murphy (6-8, 275) nor Cibolo Steele's Deionte Noel (6-3, 300), who's commitment status is in flux after being asked to greyshirt, will likely figure in the mix next season, but stranger things have happened.
The Red Raiders are also looking at adding a couple more linemen to this class, including Grossmont CC tackle A.J. Allen, who has not yet been offered by Tech but is scheduled to visit soon.
