Replenishing the Ranks: Linebacker

The following is one in a series of evaluations of the Texas Tech 2014 recruiting class in the week leading up to National Signing Day. The Red Raiders have one quarterback committed for this class and he is all about the Red Raiders. Is one QB enough?

Dakota Allen (6-2, 227)

School: Humble Summer Creek HS
Rating: | National Position Rank: 30

Position Grade: C+

Evaluation: The C+ grade doesn't reflect poorly on Allen, it's a reflection of signing only one linebacker for a 3-4 base defense.

That being said Allen is a huge get for the Red Raiders. He's physical, instinctive and has a knack for causing turnovers. He's the 30th ranked middle backer in the nation for a reason and Tech had to beat out Big 12 rivals Kansas State, Oklahoma and TCU, among others for his services.

The knock on Allen would be a lack of speed at around the 4.8-forty time range, but he seems much faster on tape. His ability to dissect a play, react and attack is legit and eliminates any concerns I have over his 40 time.

In fact, I truly believe he can be a ball-hawking type of linebacker in pass coverage for Tech.

Though I didn't get an opportunity to see him in person, it's easy to understand why he was named the District 19-4A Defensive Player of the Year and one of the Top 100 players of his class in Texas.

The Red Raiders return a plethora of intriguing young, talented scholarship linebackers, including several from a large haul in 2013, and I would think are in no rush to press Allen into service. He may redshirt, but look for him to get some seasoning on special teams either in the fall or in 2015 and to challenge for playing time by 2016.

Recruit quote: "I'm excited for the football part of Texas Tech. I know something great is going to happen while I'm there and that's what I'm ready for. I don't think it (being the only LB of the class) adds pressure but gets me more motivated to show them why they made the right decision." -Dakota Allen
